Cardi B makes money moves once more on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart dated July 7. She takes over the number-one spot with “I Like It” featuring J Balvin and Bad Bunny. It’s the second chart-topper for Cardi B following “Bodak Yellow” in the fall of 2017. That makes her the first female rapper ever to score two number-one hits — and she did it in less than a year. But can she hold on to the top spot? She needs to watch out for a Drake juggernaut next week.
Not only is Cardi B the first female rapper to hit number-one twice, she’s also the first female solo artist in any genre to score two number-one hits from her debut album since Lady Gaga reigned with “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” in 2009. And it’s the first number-one hit for Latin artists J Balvin and Bad Bunny. It’s the first number-one hit performed at least partly in Spanish since Luis Fonsi‘s “Despacito” dominated for 16 weeks last summer. Will “I Like It” have just as much staying power?
Maybe not. Drake took a couple of significant tumbles this week with “God’s Plan” down one spot to number-nine and “Nice for What” down three spots to number-six. This is the first time in months that Drake hasn’t had any songs in the top-five, but he might skyrocket next week.
His new album “Scorpion” was just released on June 29, and it’s already breaking streaming records. That could mean big rebounds for “Nice for What” and “God’s Plan,” along with the 23 other songs from the double album that could help him achieve chart domination. Will that be enough for him to reclaim the top spot?
